Denton Texas Weekend Trip

April 21, 2020

Hi all! I thought that this would be the perfect time to share a travel post, since all of us are waiting for the moment that we can hop back on a plane and travel somewhere new. I traveled to Texas for the first time for a friend’s wedding! We traveled to Denton and I wanted to share some of the places that we went on our weekend trip.

Day 1- Friday

Grant and I had an early flight (6:30am, yikes) out of San Diego Airport.. This airport is a name you have most definitely heard from me because it is my airport of choice to fly out of near where I live! We flew in the beginning stages of a storm, which was absolutely terrifying to me because any amount of turbulence gives me an extreme amount of anxiety. We landed at Dallas Love Field Airport in the early afternoon and I could not have been happier to be off that plane. Once we got our luggage, we took a Lyft to our hotel to drop off our luggage and start the day.

We stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriott Denton. We chose this hotel because our friends had a block for their wedding guests. We had an absolutely beautiful room with a king bed, pull out couch, and beautiful bathroom. It was the perfect size for the two of us and included breakfast, which is something that I always look for in a hotel.

Once we had checked in and dropped off our luggage, we went straight to lunch because we were starving. I had researched some places before we had arrived, so we went to my top pick. We took another Lyft to LSA Burger Company since it had already started to rain. We sat on the top level of the restaurant because it was full of windows! We ordered more food than we could have ever consumed in one sitting. We started with a flight of margaritas (we desperately needed it) and brisket queso. That queso was by far one of the best queso that I ever had! In regards to burgers, I ordered the Ready Freddie burger (on a gluten free bun of course) which has cheddar, bacon, grilled onions, and pickles. It was DELICIOUS!

After we had an amazing lunch, we went back to the hotel to get ready for the welcome reception for our friend’s wedding! While we were getting ready and during the party, there was the biggest and craziest rain and thunderstorm that I have ever experienced. Due to the weather, we went back up to our hotel room after the welcome reception and went to bed.

Day 2- Saturday

I woke up early on Saturday morning to Grant shaking me awake. I was so confused until he started screaming that it was snowing!!! Until that day, there hadn’t been measurable snow in Denton for 3 years! Being from Southern California, I rarely ever see snow let alone a snow storm. We watched the snow for what seemed like hours before we got dressed and ran around in the snow just for fun. After we had our fun, we ate breakfast at the hotel and set out to explore Denton with the small window of time that we had.

Our first stop was coffee! One thing that I have to do on every trip is to try a local coffee shop. We chose West Oak Coffee Bar and it was so worth it. There was so much seating inside and the coffee shop turns into a bar at night! We both ordered a vanilla latte, which was perfect since it was 30 degrees out! We sat in the cute coffee shop and relaxed until we were warm enough to continue exploring.

We went to the Courthouse on the Square next which as you can tell from the picture, is absolutely stunning. There was still some snow that hadn’t melted, so we built a snowman and took in the beautiful scenery. After taking some pictures, we ventured in and out of the small shops and boutiques in the square. We picked up some stickers, cards, and mementos to remember the trip!

We stopped for lunch at a restaurant that we know and love, Mellow Mushroom. I can always guarantee that they will have a delicious GF pizza! We already had our next step planned even before we ate lunch, which was Denton County Brewing Company. The second that I found out they made their own hard seltzer, it hit the top of my list. There is so much space to relax and they have board games for you to play while you are having drinks! Grant I played battleship while having our drinks, it was a blast. I tried the Mango Tropiclaw and it was delicious!

After our drinks, we went back to the hotel to get ready for the wedding! I get emotional at every wedding, but there is a whole different feeling when you are watching someone close to you make the lifelong commitment to their best friend. We had the best night celebrating the happy couple surrounded by our closest friends. We drank, danced, and partied!

Day 3- Sunday

After a night full of love and partying, we woke up at the last possible moment to get the hotel breakfast before it closed. We enjoyed our morning with coffee in bed before sadly packing up our things to get ready to head to the airport. We took yet another Lyft to the airport to meet some of our friends to say goodbye before we all hopped on our different flights. Something that isn’t talked about enough is how hard it is to leave a group of friends when everyone lives in different states/areas. It is absolutely heart wrenching.

Once we said our goodbyes, we got our traditional Starbucks drinks and boarded the plane. Thankfully our flight home was much smoother, so we landed safely back in San Diego!

I hope that this blog post can help you find some places to explore in Denton! Grant and I didn’t have as much time as we would have liked to explore Texas, so we will most definitely be going back. Leave a comment below of places in Texas we should explore!
